 The Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), planned to see its first light in 2024, with its 39m aperture will be by far the largest ground-based telescope in the world. HIRES (HIgh REsolution Spectrograph) is one of the instruments it will be equipped with: the project has recently concluded its two years feasibility study, and its now ready to proceed to phase B. It consists of two main modules, warm (BVRI) and cold IR (zYJH) spectrographs providing a spectral coverage in the wavelength range of 0.37-2.4 um, with different observing modes optimized with respect to accuracy, throughput, and spatial resolution, two main resolution modalities (HR=100,000 and UHR=150,000). Designing a polarimeter for HIRES is challenging due to the multiple mirrors with an asymmetric distribution of the telescope. In this talk I will illustrate the optical design of the polarimeter, the first results we have obtained from simulating the instrumental polarization under different conditions and the necessity of combining a polarimetric ray tracing code with the diffraction theory in order to get a detailed PSF, which can be more easily interpreted and convolved with the instrumental profile of the spectrograph in the framework of the global end-to-end simulator developed by the HIRES team.
